Pool frogs
Recognizing amphibian sounds
It’s high time I started writing about the trip to Warta Mouth National Park that happened last month. After a post-trip high came a post-production low (which needs its own story) so any writing was naturally delayed by doing literally anything else — but now it’s time to catalog some photos and memories.
When I arrived at 3 am in Przyborów, I was overwhelmed by the sound of definitely-not-birds. It was so loud it almost made me sad because I was sure that I wouldn’t be able to record any bird sounds, not from most-likely-frogs screaming at the top of their lungs (Here I checked if frogs even have lungs. They do, but they can also partially breathe through their skin).
After walking for some time and testing the audio recorder I sat by a small bridge separating the area by Postomia River from the National Park. The area on the other side of the pond was off-limits due to northern lapwing’s breeding season, so I stayed on the southern side and listened to the chorus of barn swallows hunting for insects mid-air.
They were loud and busy enough to be heard among the frogs. Then I did not know which frog species exactly was singing a duet with the swallows, but after watching this video (Polish descriptions only) I can assume that those were the pool frogs.
Even though pool frogs don’t make the most pleasant of sounds, accompanied by barn swallows it may be considered a bit more relaxing. So I hope you enjoy the audio recordings, and maybe if you managed to read this whole post, you can tell me about your favorite frog species in the comments!
